The public transport service is very safe - Major cities have good Metro and
bus Services and train services are very punctual. The only thing to watch out for are
strikes "Sciopero" which can be quite frequent.
Trains
Trains are quick, very inexpensive, and very punctual.
You must validate your ticket before boarding the train as a ticket can be used any time
within 30 days from the date of purchase of the ticket. To validate your ticket stamp the
ticket inside one of the yellow boxes you will see in and around the station.
Busses & Trams
You buy your tickets at newsagents "Tabaccheria" You can buy them in books of ten, all day
tickets, weekly or monthly tickets. They are very inexpensive. In most cities one ticket
lasts for 70 minutes from the moment you validate the ticket. You can use as many busses
as you like to reach your destination within the 70 minutes. You validate the ticket when
you enter the first bus by stamping it in the yellow box.
Taxis
Taxis are relatively expensive and compare with London prices. They are coloured white and can be
found in specially marked taxi bays in main piazzas or at train stations.
Safety
Italy is a safe country but, as with any place, it is always best not to tempt fate by
displaying jewellery and money. All main cities have some unsafe areas but the city centres
are safe places. However, you should take special care of your belongings at main railway
stations especially at night time as pick-pockets often wait around these areas.
