Driving
Italians like to make up for any lost time when driving their cars. They have a tendency
to double speed limits, oppose one-way traffic, create their own lanes and often mistake
red for green. Regulations are understood but rarely abided by, except (perhaps) when
police are present. It is safe to say New cars don't stay new very long in Italy especially
in cities. Big rubbery bumpers may help delay the inevitable. To be fair, however, traffic
does move surprisingly quickly even if chaotically.
Parking
Don't be tempted to do as the Italians do and park where you like, Traffic wardens are
always on the prowl and are quick to confiscate illegally parked cars. In bigger cities
such as Rome or Milan it is better to park outside the city centre and use the metro.
Public transport in Italy is efficient and quite safe. You can park in Blue and White
parking zones. The Blue zones are in the more central areas and are more expensive.
Flashing Lights
Another very important thing to remember, in Italy, flashing your lights at another car
does not mean "Please after you", it means "Get out of the way I'm coming!"
After a certain hour late in the evening certain traffic lights in and around the city
centre flash amber intermittently. This means you can cross the junction when you like but
be aware of other vehicles.
Avoid Tram Lines
Also, while driving in big cities, do not travel down tram and bus lanes (they are
often on a ramp in the middle of the road or marked out to the left or right of the main
road) expect a fine if you do!
